THE
ADVENTURES
OF BRIGADIER
GERARD
—
The Crime of the Brigadier
Before March 1811, clearly, but necessitating time for Gerard to return from official and unofficial hospitality in England after his capture in July 1810. General Sainte-Croix, beau sabreur among the dragoons, was killed in October 1810 while reconnoitring English lines (by a gun-boat pot-shot). Since fox-hunting, however inappropriately, formed the subject of many Edwardian English Christmas cards, we may permit ourselves a date in late December. Wellington had withdrawn behind his impregnable Lines at Torres Vedras on 8 October; Massena had fallen back on Santarem on 14 November. Modern readers may need to be told that the fox-hunting religion required that the fox be always torn to pieces by the hounds, and that the hounds were sacrosanct.
